THE LANGUAGE OF SOCCER

SOCCER LANGUAGE

Find below an extensive list of words that has been used during practice and games throughout the soccer community.

The document provides simple statements that will be made that are simple and basic to me but you may not completely understand! This will help you as coaches and fellow coaches once players move to other teams.

Passing

•    Check In – Move away from the play and then quickly dart back towards your team mate with the ball to create a passing option in front of the defenders

•    Hit (Feet/Space/Name) – Pass the ball towards a target, usually this will mean a penetrating pass

•    Play to (Feet/Space/Name) – As above

•    Down the Line – Pass the ball forward along the side line for a team mate to move on to

•    Play Wide – Pass the ball towards the sides to a team mates feet.

•    Through Ball – A pass which is played in behind the opposition defense for a team mate to run on to

•    Whip It In – Put bend/curl on the pass/cross to make it harder to defend. Always whip it to the far post.

•    Play It Early – Play the pass as quickly as possible to catch the opposition out of position

•    Overlap – Run around the outside of your team mate with the ball to cause a problem for the defender

•    Over The Top – Pass the ball over the top of the opposition defense

•    Empty It - Play the ball as far away as possible (towards target player) when defending under pressure

•    Easy Ball – Play what you see, move the ball up the field with simple passes.

•    Just Deliver – Quickly offer an end product to what ever you are doing.

•    Support – Look at how you are supporting the player with the ball, can you get into a position to receive an easy pass.

•    Killer Pass – Play a decisive pass to create a goal scoring opportunity

•    Split Them – Play a pass between two opposition players

•    Lay It Off – Control it, Retain it, pass to a team mate and then look to make another passing option

•    Easy Ball – Play the pass which is easiest i.e close and player in space

•    Slide It In – Sneak a ball in behind the defense for a forward to move onto

•    Switch it – Play the ball to the opposite side of the field, this can be short passes or a long pass.

•    Swing it – Play the ball across the defense in a banana shape, this will help keep the ball away from the opposition.

•    Retain The Ball – Turn and play the easiest pass, there is a high percent chance you will lose the ball if you progress forward (often after winning the ball in a close area)

•    Play Square – Release the ball at 90 degrees to the side, play square often can mean a slightly backwards pass to come away from the opposition

•    Drop In – Fill the big open gap on the field so that team mates can get you the ball, If they do you should be in a position to exploit space

•    Open Up – Expand the shell of our team. Wide players get wide, Defenders/Forwards create depth on the field.

Dribbling

•    Man on –There is an opposition player very close looking to win the ball (where you can not see him)

•    Time – You have time on the ball, settle and look to play an easy or penetrating pass.

•    Drive With It – Carry the ball forward into the space that is available, when a defender approaches slow down

•    Turn – Change direction completely as there is more space/better options behind you.

•    Slow It Down – Relax on the ball you have time to turn, move into space, there is no rush for an end product, observe the field.

•    Move With It – Make your decision as you are carrying the ball into space

•    Be creative – Take on a few players look for different runs from teammates, be unorthodox/unpredictable

Scoring

•    Finish It – Shoot now on target beyond the keepers reach

•    Strike It – Shoot quickly and make sure you hit the target, make the GK work. I believe a shot is worth while if you can get it away.

•    Hit It – Same as above

•    Chip It – Strike the understand side of the ball and loft it over the advancing GK

•    Across Goal – Always strike to the far bottom corner of the goal, a bad shot becomes a good cross that a team mate can move on to.

•    Place It – Don’t go for power, look to use accuracy, maybe the GK is out of position, maybe you are not to far from goal.

Forwards

•    Isolate The Defender – Take the defender to a place where you are 1-on-1 with them so that you can take advantage of them if the ball.

•    Play On the Defenders Shoulder – Isolate the defender and then position yourself closely to the side of him ready to spin and run when the though pass is made

•    Take Him Away – Make a run away from the play so that more space opens up for a team mate to move into.

•    Hold It Up – Win the ball and wait for your team mates to support. Do not lose the ball. Make an easy pass and spin off for a return.

•    Win It – If the ball is cleared by our defenders you have to get to it first before the opposition defenders do.

Goalkeeping

•    Posts – Make sure you have defenders marking your posts on corners or free- kicks

•    Keepers Ball – Come off line and claim ball

•    Release – Once you have made a save look to distribute the ball quickly to the forwards

•    Wide – Roll the ball out the wide defenders to build an attack

•    Line It Up – Line up the wall for the free kick

Defending

•    Challenge – Make a challenge directly for the ball, closing down space.

•    Don’t Dive In – Delay the attack by holding your position, stay on your feet

•    Touch Tight – Keep the attacker within arms reach so you can mark effectively

•    Stay Home – Do not let the attacker play the ball over your head or in behind you in any way

•    Get Back – Make a recovery run and get goal side of the ball. Look to see where the danger is as you make the run and close it down.

•    Mark Up – Find an open player of the other team and mark the goal side

•    Goal Side – You are closer to your goal GK than the attacker (booty facing goal)

•    50/50 – When the ball is in between two players and either could win the ball

•    Ball Side – You are in between the ball and the player you are marking, this will help you intercept a pass. You should try and be goal side and ball side

•    Track Back – Recovery run that specifically tracks and catches that of the person you should be marking

Tactical/Formations

•    4-4-2
•    4-3-3

This is an example of a formation in soccer:

•    4=defenders
•    4=midfielders
•    1=attackers

•    Fullbacks – Wide defenders left/right

•    Centre backs – Central defenders

•    Wingers – Also known as wide midfielders, Wingers play a little more attacking than wide midfielders

•    Wide Midfielders – Midfielders that tuck in when the team loses possession and expand out when the team is in possession

•    Centre Midfielders – Hold the middle of the field at all times.
•    Playmaker – Someone who likes to get on the ball in midfield and create chances for the team to score

•    Defensive Midfield – Plays just in front of the defense and intercepts any passed before it gets to the opposition forwards. Starts attacks through easy passes

•    The Hole – An area between our midfield and attack that can be exploited by dropping an attacker into it

•    Centre Forward – A player that can lead the line by holding the ball up and bringing others into the game. Also finishes anything chances around the box.

•    Striker – A player that can score goals, finish!

Finally four phrases that I hopefully will never here leave your mouths…

•     ‘Offsides’ – its offside
•    My Bad
•    Boot it or Boom it
